The Chilliwack Junior High School came into existence as a separate unit in September 1950, with the first principal being Mr. H.K. Manuel. Prior to that date the buildings housed the combined Chilliwack Junior-Senior High School. With the construction of the present Senior High School in that year it was possible to organize a junior high school to serve all of the pupils of Grades Seven and Eight of School District #33. The old school is comprised of three buildings - a brick and cement structure built in 1912, a frame gymnasium in 1929, and a stucco frame unit in 1938. In 1997 this school was replaced with the modern Middle School that you currently see.
In May of 2013, CMS celebrated its 100th year of offering education to the students of Chilliwack. Originally CMS was the only high school in the community and over its years it has evolved from a traditional secondary school to a junior secondary and finally as one of two middle schools serving the north side of the school district. Residing on the traditional territory of the Sto:Lo people, specifically the Skwah First Nation, CMS has had a long and very proud history with the many families and students who have entered its doors over the last ten decades.
CMS is a dual-track school that offers a Late French Immersion program at the Grade 7-9 levels for all students residing on the north side of our school district. We are also a designated Hockey Canada Hockey Skills Academy open to both boys and girls registered with Chilliwack Minor Hockey. This means that as well as welcoming students from our four feeder schools of Central Community Elementary School, FG Leary Fine Arts School, Strathcona Elementary and Little Mountain Elementary, we have students from throughout the district attending CMS. This coupled with a strong International student program means that we welcome to our school over 550 students with a wide range of talents, skills and abilities.
Working everyday with these students is a dedicated staff of over 50 who consistently strive to enable each and every one of our students to find success and to develop “the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to be self-fulfilled, socially responsible citizens in a rapidly changing world.”
